EI and Law

I know how much we love talking about how technology has taken over our world, how cool that is, and how much easier our lives have become. While all this is great, we also need to be mindful about the many changes that have occured. If a couple of years ago working hard was more important than the work itself being meaningful, today one has to take a more wholistic approach. To me, learning about Emotional Intelligence ("EI") became important when I started observing how my work life impacted my personal life and especially my health. Working in start- ups business development for almost a decade I've got to learn that in order to estimate the level of efficiency with which your business is run, you have to study the roots of what may be the cause of the potential disruption. Given that today' technology has caused such a huge gap between how the world is being run, not to mention the disruptions brought on so many industries, and law is being practiced and delivered, EI became more relevant than ever. What does it mean to be EI when dealing with legal matters, regarldess of the role you play in them? My brief experience in law taught me that knowing how to deal with an upset judge or client can ease your job tremendously. EI comes down to one having great social, and communication skills; and a high level of awareness in dealing with matters that can benefit all parties, rather than causing more distress, psychological and/or financial damages. What steps are you taking to improve your EI today?
